“Never before have good zoological gardens been so important, in a world of increasing damage to and destruction of biodiversity, both as visitor attractions and as education and conservation centres. This book contains unique information and analyses 80 leading zoological gardens in 21 European countries. This is a must-have book for all those interested in zoos – enthusiasts, sceptics, visitors, sponsors, zoo owners, politicians, wildlife conservationists and all those working in and for zoos!” – THE INDEPENDENT ZOO ENTHUSIASTS SOCIETY

Approximately 120 children a year are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in the UK. It is the second most common solid tumor in infants. Most children are diagnosed by 21/2 years of age. Up to sixty percent of them have high risk disease that has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body) on diagnosis. High risk children diagnosed before age 5 have a 20% chance of surviving. For children over age 5, the prognosis is even worse.
JACK – Joining Against Cancer in Kids was established in 2008, supported by 2Simple Trust – in addition to helping children access clinical trials not available in the UK, a further aim was to improve existing treatment protocols for children with neuroblastoma as well as research into new treatments for this devastating cancer. The initiative was supported by officers of the Metropolitan Police Service, and also by family and friends of Jack Brown who died in May 2009 aged 7.
By the end of 2009 the fund had raised sufficient resources to fund Dr Naomi Fersht at University College Hospital London to undertake a major research project – “Improving the outcomes for children with neuroblastoma through the optimisation of radiation treatments”.
J-A-C-K has provided funding of £100,000 over the next three years into this important research which includes bringing Ultrace Mibg therapy to the UK. This was accomplished with simple fundraising initiatives undertaken mainly by police officers and families of children with neuroblastoma. In the past year, the charity has also helped three children to obtain treatment in New York and Philadelphia.
For every child cured, another is diagnosed. We desperately need your help to bring a successful genetic trial which will provide a ‘personalised’ approach to treatment of this childhood cancer that is currently only available to participating hospitals in the U.S., to the UK. Our aim is to raise 250,000 to fund the trial at London hospitals. Your help would be deeply appreciated.
